May 2024 Newsletter

May 2024 Newsletter

May brings us Beltane, a genuinely ancient Celtic celebration marking the end of Winter and the birth of Summer, more recently celebrated as May Day.

Unite and unite and let us all unite,
For Summer is acome unto day,
And whither we are going we will all unite,
In the Merry morning of May”

The Padstow May Night Song

The sap that lay dormant in nature in the dark of Winter, has risen through early Spring and exploded into green. Beltane is about joy, ecstasy and love and so reminds us all to get back in touch with our own sense of delight. To do what brings us pleasure, and to remember what a gift it is to be alive. There is a lovely May Day celebration at the Cerne Giant reenacting the vibrant May Day tradition, when the Morris Dancers and villagers gather at dawn on the Trendle, the original site of the village Maypole at the top of the Cerne Giant. It’s an early and steep start to get up to salute the sunrise, but it will certainly be joyful to celebrate the start of summer with a barrel of Beltane Beer!

We are so used to working hard and being responsible and sensible that we can forget to do the things that bring us pure joy. Beauty and joy and laughter are necessities of our being, and nature brims with them… In May flawless blue skies, vibrant green fresh shoots, smells of bluebells and wild garlic in the hedgerows, lilac bursting from buds, cacophony of the dawn chorus and the lushness of fields all around.

What is a Kundalini Awakening?

The energy of the rising sap in nature has many similarities with the rising of the energy of kundalini. In Sanskrit, kundal means “coiled snake.” Kundalini refers to the feminine energy that is believed, in tantric yoga tradition, to be present within each of us since birth and coiled at the base of the spine. Kundalini energy is considered to be the ultimate life force and the source of our creative power, spiritual gifts, and shakti, or divine feminine energy. Tantric tradition holds that when dormant kundalini energy is unleashed through yoga practice, it flows upward through the seven chakras (energy centres) to the crown of the head, balancing the energetic body and accessing expanded consciousness.

It is believed that your entire being—mind, body, and spirit—goes through a massive energetic shift, causing you to move through life in a very different way. A kundalini awakening is a powerful experience in enhanced self-awareness. According to tradition, an awakening can instigate long-term changes, including: feelings of blissfulness, enhanced psychic abilities, more compassion and empathy, increased creativity, increased spiritual connection, feeling aligned and ‘in the flow’.

But yoga is never about results, and this may never be achieved. The purpose is the practice itself, which will help you understand where you need to focus your energy, when you need to find more compassion for yourself and others, and how to become more aware of your own needs.

Your own kundalini awakening could be as soft and gentle as sitting in quiet meditation for 15 minutes and experiencing more peace than ever before or it could be a more emotional process.

The point isn’t the actual moment of the kundalini awakening. It’s the continued awareness that accompanies the practice of yoga and the growth that accompanies it. Yoga is practice, keep practising.

Blackthorn Blossom

We hope you have had a lovely Easter Weekend.

There is much-needed blue sky and sunshine out of the window as I write this. As much as I appreciate all weather, the rain has been very testing and we are all ready for some sunshine. Despite the weather, there are beautiful signs of Spring.

Viniyoga Therapy Training

Our Yoga Therapy Viniyoga training group have finished the first 10 days of the second year.

We always have a pink day, as part of our 10-day training, as it makes us feel so good, and here we are:

Viniyoga Therapy Training group

The closing ceremony at the end of our 10 days consisted of the New Zealand  “hongi “,  a traditional Māori greeting performed by two people pressing their noses together, and touching foreheads. The meaning of ‘hongi’  roughly translates to the “sharing of breath”. With this powerful practice of sharing of breath, we offered a flower or piece of fruit, to someone along with the offering of what we had learned from our yoga therapy practice that day.

My Daily Mantra

From this, I have established a daily mantra, that before I get out of bed, (and when I go to bed and any other time I feel I need it), I say or feel my mantra. I am joyous and grateful for all I have and for the people in my life. And I don’t just recite this mantra, I feel it in my body – it helps to smile at the same time! I have encouraged some of my students to do the same and invite you all to try it. This is a powerful practice, the modern science of epigenetics describes it as revealing how our thoughts, emotions and environment can influence the activity of our genes, ultimately shaping our health, behaviours and experiences. Of course, the ancient yogis always knew that we are masters of our own destiny.

Reiki Gokai (Principles)

I would like to say a big thank you to Wrio Russell who has been travelling a great distance to take our Reiki Share gatherings for the last couple of years. As well as sharing his great wisdom and experience of Reiki from his teachers, he introduced us to the Reiki Gokai (principles) which we chanted before our Reiki Share. They too make a lovely daily mantra:

Kyo dake wa (just for today)
Ikaru na. (do not be angry)
Shinpai suna. (Do not be anxious)
Kansha shite. (Be grateful)
Gyo o hage me (do your duty)
Hito ni shinsetsu ni. (Be kind to others)

Wrio feels it is time to hand the baton over, don’t worry our Reiki Share will continue, and details will be in the next newsletter.

Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been; yoga cares about the person you are becoming. Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose, and for it to be truly called yoga, its essence must be embodied.”

Full moon

We had the most wonderful full moon last week. Hopefully, you caught a glimpse of it between the rain clouds.

For the past two weeks, my personal practice has been saluting the moon with the chant Om Somaya namaha. This refers to Lord Chandra, the deity of the moon. Chanting “Somaya” is said to invoke the energy and essence of Lord Chandra, seeking his blessings for emotional balance and inner peace.

The moon’s association with water also signifies emotional fluidity, making this mantra particularly beneficial for those seeking emotional healing and release. Chanting this mantra regularly is said to bring emotional stability and harmony to relationships. It is believed to help individuals overcome mood swings and find inner balance with the soothing vibrations of the mantra.

Today most of our education is secular, and learning is intrinsically linked to reading rather than chanting. In ancient times most knowledge, particularly sacred knowledge was transmitted through chants. Thus chanting and learning were intimately linked. As well as preserving knowledge it develops the intellect and memory. Learning to chant refines our capacity to listen and listening requires an open mind. The ancients used chanting to cultivate and celebrate our relationship with ourselves, our society, our environment and our source. If you want to learn more about chanting, we have a monthly Vedic Chanting class with Sarah Ryan on a Saturday.

This month the yoga centre will be full of chanting as we have the third module of the Viniyoga Yoga Therapy course UK. This is taught by Dr Kausthubha Desikachar, of the Viniyoga tradition of which mantra and vedic chanting is an essential aspect following the holistic and classical teachings of Professor Sri T Krishnamacharya. The 10-day module will mean there may be disruptions to the timetable so check the calendar for your usual classes as 5 of our teachers will once again be immersed in the ancient teachings and yoga philosophy and techniques from the Viniyoga tradition.

Moon Salutation 3

Many of us are used to the various sun salutations but maybe not so well known are the moon salutations, above is a beautiful moon salutation.

New Classes

Traditionally meditation has always been done either as a morning or evening practice and so we are delighted to have a new meditation class to complement our established Morning Meditation Class with Marj Snape.

You can read more about Claire.

Sharon Morgan plans to start an early morning Pilates class on Wednesdays from 8:00 am to 8:45 am, providing an opportunity for early birds and those who want to exercise before work. Also, check the workshops page as she has some more Sunday shorts coming up in April. The men’s workshops are proving popular as are ‘basics’ for beginners.

February 2024 Newsletter

There are snowdrops appearing, and the daffodils and tulips are shooting closely behind. With the excitement of Spring just around the corner, there is also dismay of our natural environment suffering.

Since the 1930s there has been a steady decline in biodiversity in this country. According to the charity Plantlife, 97% of UK wildflower meadows have been lost since the 1930s. A lot of that would have happened during and after the war, and land that might previously have been left as meadows would have been given over to intensive farming and pesticides.

Now we are not used to seeing wildflower meadows, something that would have been so common to our grandparents. Wildflowers are the food plants for so many invertebrates, and they in turn provide food for birds and mammals. Without these plants, there is no life. The functioning of the planet and our survival depends on plants. Encouraging wildflowers to grow on our own patches of green, however small, is a wonderful way of keeping in touch with the wild on our own doorstep.

Whats grabbing your attention?

We live in an ‘attention economy’. Attention is now a prime commodity, which can be bought and sold by advertisers and corporations. Everybody wants our attention. Intention follows attention. Our attention shapes our perception of the world, our actions, and the reality that we want to create. With our attention, we decide who we want to hear, and see, and how we want to spend our time. Our ability to respond to the earth’s suffering demands a capacity to keep returning to it, even when there is so much to distract us from it.

Yoga helps us reclaim our attention, attention thankfully can be replenished. Mindfulness practices encourage us to experience the sights, smells and sounds of our immediate surroundings. Training our attention in meditation deeply enriches our experiences of life. When we look with different eyes at the already familiar, it generates wonder, and compassion, which in turn generates more attention, more love for the world and more joy in relating to it. Deep attention calls us into deeper relationships, which leads to a great sense of belonging and connection.

There is an urgent need to understand ‘attention’ as a valuable resource for social and environmental regeneration. Where we can and do place it, matters more and more.

So decide where you want to place your attention, maybe start with flowers in your garden, on your window sill, or in the pavement cracks as you walk along. Notice the wildflowers that grow in any tiny scrap of spare land, let your attention wander in nature all around you, feel the joy, the compassion, the wonder…

We are pleased to announce two new teachers who are joining us. They are both newly qualified but come with lots of enthusiasm and eagerness, and step into previously popular classes that have been missed.

January 2024 Newsletter

Happy new year to you all!

I would like to start January’s newsletter with an ancient universal prayer, which is part of the Pavamana Mantra from the Brhadaranyaka Upanishad. The translation of the entire mantra is:

“Lead us from ignorance to knowledge, from darkness to light and from death to immortality.” It is used as a purifying prayer which is chanted for the wellbeing of oneself or for humanity.

Om asato ma sadgamaya
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya

Om shanti shanti shanti

What’s happening in nature?

Our December newsletter began with an observation of what was happening in nature, and this newsletter continues with the same theme. There can be a lot of pressure to jump into the New Year with new resolutions and suggestions to try new things, new diets, get fit… with lots of energy, and push, but this is just getting back onto the treadmill.

Winter River

We are still in the depths of winter, take a moment between times to look back at the year that has passed and to let go of what is no longer serving you. It is a time to look forward to what you would like to see in your life ahead, a time for observation and introspection. Nature is still sleeping, it throws up the odd snowdrop, and primrose, but there is still a long time before Spring is here. Take your time, there is no rush, keep your yoga practice slow, and nourishing and supportive, there is no need to end your period of rest and recuperation. Our workshops this month still offer plenty of opportunity for this. And our weekly classes are trickling back to a full timetable by the time we are half way through January.

Restorative 3

New therapist Lauren Watson

We offer a big welcome to Lauren Watson, who is joining our wonderful team in the therapy room. She is offering her Spirit Ayurveda. Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life.” Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing”, and naturally goes hand in hand with yoga. It stems from the ancient Vedic culture and was taught for many thousands of years in an oral tradition from accomplished masters to their disciples.

Lauren Watson

Ayurveda allows us to access our inner healer, change our actions, and, in turn, transform the world! We are so pleased to have Lauren offering her skills at the yoga centre. You can read all about Lauren here.

Winter: time to rest and renew…

Winter

What’s happening in Nature in the Winter?

Many of our workshops this month, such as the Restorative Workshops, the Yin Workshops, and the Yoga Nidra (sleep), connect us to what nature is doing – resting. This ‘wintering’ or hibernation is a crucial activity, giving the earth and other living things time to rest so that they can renew themselves again. These times of darkness can give us refuge and a moment to pause.

Wintering invites us to strip back our own layers, just as the deciduous trees shed their leaves and reveal their form. It can be a time for us to contemplate who we are, who we present to the world, and then maybe make some changes with our new year resolutions or our sankalpa as we do in yoga nidraNikki Greenham’s workshopLet Love Shine is a unique event that combines the power of meditation, tuning fork sounds and the therapeutic practice of journaling. This is a lovely way to enter a state of deep relaxation, allowing you to release stress and tension, and get clarity for any worries or life decisions you may be facing.

Many of us may still have to work, but we can have more time under the duvet, eat nourishing soups and stews, switch off the tv, sit and read or just stare at the firelight.

Sitting Meditation

Be Reminded of Natures Lessons

Light is such an essiential part of well being, so if you struggle with the lack of it, enjoy the xmas lights, light candles, decorate your home with twinkling lights and make sure you walk outside each day, for the little light there is and to be reminded of nature’s lessons.

We have a Candlelight Yoga class with Kim Jones, and two wonderful workshops: Winter Solstice Drum and Chant with Magdalena Atkinson and Honouring the Winter Solstice with Sian Alcock. The Winter Solstice is a celebration of the light returning, the days growing longer and the strength of the sun returning.

Light

Many of our teachers and therapists will take time to rest over the Xmas break so do check the calendar for your weekly classes.

Seasons Greetings to you all, we hope you have a nurturing Winter time, with lots of festive cheer too.

Kim Mackie

As well as a change in the seasons and the clocks, we also have lots of changes at the Yoga and Therapy Centre. Our wonderful Kim Mackie who has been teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa for the last 8 years ever since we have been open, is changing her classes to Classical Yoga, a Viniyoga approach which she has been studying now for several years. This change will take place in November with slight changes in timings too so please check the timetable.

All good teachers are constantly training and constantly learning, and changing not only their own practice but their teachings for their students so that it is appropriate. The ancient yogis based their concept of physical fitness and health on an entirely different set of criteria to modern times:

  • a feeling of lightness in the body
  • an ability to withstand change and
  • a stable body and focused mind ready to sit for pranayama and meditation.

They understood that our physical needs change and so they developed the science of asana practice as a way of promoting the balanced growth of a body into old age. From infancy to senior years the physical yoga practice should change according to the individual: constitution, place, season, gender, time, age, capacities, aspirations and activities. For Kim’s students this change will be no surprise as they will all have been changing and developing along side one another.

Year One of Our Viniyoga Therapy Course

Both Kim and Arianna and myself have just finished Year One of our Viniyoga Therapy Course, a traditional teaching based on Patanjalis yoga sutras and also on an ancient model of health from the Taittiriya Upanisad, which has been transmitted by word of mouth from student to teacher over thousands of years. Our students I am sure will all be reaping the benefits of these teachings from the three of us!!

We are excited to have experienced Iyengar teacher Rachel Lovegrove coming to the yoga centre. Rachel is offering a weekend of Iyengar Yoga, although you can book each day as a stand alone if you can’t make both days.

We are very pleased to have Magdalena back with her Drums and Chanting monthly workshop, Kim Jones with her Menopause Yoga Workshop and a Gong Bath and Kundalini Yoga Workshop for Anger with Arianna Puran Udini

We have lots of lovely Yin and Restorative Workshops to help you slow down, and embrace the inevitable onset of Winter, the dark part of the year: the darker evenings, the later dawns,  the storms of winter, and hopefully time for stillness and a more internal focus. Stillness brings tranquillity, which in turn brings insight, leading to understanding, wisdom and a new sense of purpose.

October 2023 newsletter

September was a busy and very thought provoking month. We held the 2nd module of the 3 year Viniyoga Therapy Course in which 3 of our teachers are participating in.

Viniyoga Therapy Course participants

Talking about Vasanas

One topic from these 10 days was talking about Vasanas (Sanskrit word for impressions). These impressions accumulate over our life time; traumas, thoughts, conditioning from family and society and create the Samskaras, the patterns within which we live our lives. We cannot change these impressions but we can become aware of them, and then change the Samskaras. We can stop constantly repeating the negative patterns that have evolved and made us who we are. Indeed the practices of yoga help us to do that: with mantra, visualization, breath and meditation.

The Miracle and Meaning of this life

At the end of the month we had Derek Thorne from the Vedantarama Advaita Centre in Somerset, who spoke about the Miracle and Meaning of this life. It left me with a sense of how exciting life is and what a great time it is to be alive. Yes there are always terrible things happening, such is the nature of life and human existence, but when you think about how many people exist side by side in peace and harmony on this planet and the acheievements of humanity, it is quite amazing. For several years now I have stopped watching the news or reading the newspapers, as I don’t want those images and patterns to be the predominant ones in my thoughts, thereby creating and shaping the life I lead.

Quantum physics tells us that the the entire Universe emerged from thought. You create your life through your thoughts. What you are thinking now is creating your future life. So think the life you want to live, think positively don’t dwell on the negative!

Child thinking positively

A Fairwell to Ed Mitchell

The yoga centre will be 8 years old this Autumn, and throughout this time Ed Mitchell has been beside me helping with the website and the newsletter. The day has finally come when Ed has to move onto other things, so thank you Ed for being such a rock by my side, for being calm and intelligent and funny, I couldn’t have done it without you. And also thank you for finding your replacement and delivering me into the hands of Beccy. A big welcome to you Beccy!

September 2023 newsletter

lake
We hope you have had a wonderful Summer, enjoyed the outdoors and relaxed. I was lucky enough to swim in beautiful clear mountain lakes,  walk in the pure fresh air of magnificent mountains and have some time with old friends on my Summer holiday.  It relaxed me, recharged me, it allowed me to shift gears.

man on a mountain

Taking in the views, swimming, reading novels, cooking and enjoying simple camp food felt like one long meditation. A meditative connection with my surroundings, allowing me to shift from the rush of everyday life… a shift to a low vibrational state of peace that immersed me and connected me deeply with nature. I observed others on holiday busy, with a need to do this and go here and there… and was thankful for my own situation. My daily yoga practice was mostly pranayama; I had time to explore my breath in a deeper way, reaping the benefits, helping me slide effortlessly into relaxation.

The coming month is a time to move into a calmer pattern and more regular rhythm after the high energy and excitement of Summer. We hope some of our workshops support you in finding your rhythm. Meanwhile, all our regular classes resume and as we settle back into our routines.

As ever, the details are below and in the calendar – please check it!

With best wishes from Sharon and all the teachers and therapists at Dorchester Yoga and Therapy Centre

sunrise at burton-bradstoc beach in summer solstice 2023

We have passed the Summer Solstice. I watched the sunrise on the 21st June with my dog on Burton Bradstock beach and did some walking meditation. In the afternoon I met a friend at The Kingston Russel Stone Circle. Prehistoric stone rows, stone circles and standing stones are littered across the West Country. If you can get to them, they make a nice pilgrimage for midsummer celebrations. Being in their presence not only makes you wonder what our ancestors felt and did during solstice festivities, but the considered placement and their ability to withstand millennia of change can be very inspiring.

These moments make us stand back from our daily routines.

There is a sense of time standing still. This gives us time to pause and examine our lives; both reflecting back and looking forward to what we want to manifest.

This can be a relief when our lives are otherwise in a state of constant busyness.

Like nature we must learn when to expel our energy in the act of creation and when to rest and be still.

While the turning of the year back into the dark half half can feel a little sad, for some it can be a relief to step away from the long hours of light and the frenetic pace of life. There is a sense of the calm returning. Although the days are getting shorter, there is plenty of summer still head of us. Many weeks ahead of fun, relaxation, reading books, sunshine, good food, hanging out with friends and family, and enjoying nature, the sea, and all that our beautiful countryside has to offer.

backbend yoga pose

Summer is a great time to do work on deeper backbends, as we feel flexible with the hot weather and active with the long hours of sunlight.

  • Backbends are invigorating and strengthening.
  • They stretch the quads and hip flexors and help open up the shoulders and chest, an area where lots of us hold tension.
  • They build strength and power in the legs, arms and back muscles.
  • By increasing mobility and awareness of the spine, backbends improve posture and can help to alleviate some kinds of back and neck pain.

As backbends open the chest and upper body they stimulate the Heart chakra (Anahata) allowing us to open more fully in our lives too; to our emotions, experiences and in our relationships.

Have a wonderful Summer enjoy all that it offers, and enjoy all that we have on offer too.

There will be no newsletter in August so both July and August workshops and course dates are below. As ever, the details are below and in the calendar – please check it!
